Built to honor the local writer Jorge Isaacs and designed by Hermann S. Bohmer, a Caleño engineer, the theater was built in 1931. The architecture is a French Neo-Classical style, along with an influence of Italian Romanticism.
One of the most well preserved and beautiful buildings in Cali is the Enrique Buenaventura Municipal Theater. Its cornerstone was laid in 1918, and in 1982 the building was declared a National Monument by the Colombian Government.
