Municipal Theater Enrique Buenaventura and Historical Document
One of the most well preserved and beautiful buildings in Cali is the Enrique Buenaventura Municipal Theater. Its cornerstone was laid in 1918, and in 1982 the building was declared a National Monument by the Colombian Government.
The theater opened its doors to the public in November of 1927, with an Italian opera called Trovador. Since those days the theater has undergone several renovations, with the first taking place in 1953. In 2008, a study by the University of the Valley found that moisture and lack of maintenance had been taking its toll on the building. Being a National Monument, the restoration project was quickly started and the theater is in its best shape since opening its doors.
The architectural style is listed as Italian Classic, and the building is painting in a striking yellow color. The capacity of the theater is 1,039 people, and hosts operas, musicals, and concerts of Colombian and international artists
