Caleños and Caleñas, The Amazing people of Cali.
Known as Calenos, people from Calí are famous for their friendliness, their love for la Rumba (the party) and for their World Famous Salsa Dancing. The city moves to the rhythm of Salsa, but it’s not all fiesta as Caleños are also very hard working and family oriented.
Calí is the most ethnically diverse region of Colombia, comprising of a larger percentage of Afro-Colombians (25% – 30%) than Bogota or Medellin, as well as a large Mestizo (mix of European and Amerindian) population.
Caleños have a fun way of speaking with each other, often sounding musical and with a lot of local slang.
The women in Calí are known for their beauty, (see Song: Las Caleñas son como las flores) and it’s easy to fall in love several times a day. The warm weather makes for more revealing clothing than Bogota or Medellin, and an overall more tranquilo (relaxed) feeling to the city.
Caleños have a fun way of speaking with each other, often sounding musical and with a lot of local slang. Jokes are dropped in at every chance, and sound effects and hand motions mix in heavily, making a short story about a trip to the store sound more like an adventure out of a Gabriel Marquez book.
They certainly have the gift to gab and getting a word in can be difficult at times, especially if you don’t know much Spanish. This <<speak like a Caleño guide>> should help you receive some smiles, laughs, high-fives, and possibly the most important thing, respect.
